What's a VirtID?

A VirtID is a unique email address. You create one for each site you visit -- a Virtual Identity. It only passes email to you if it meets simple criteria you set up -- like whether the email comes from the right site. You read email at your regular mail box but without sites knowing your true email address. Your real mail box is shielded from spam.

How VirtID Email Works

[Use a VirtID when buying something; desired mail is delivered to your mailbox and spam to that address is not]

Why VirtID?

It's understandable that you don't want to give out your real email address to every site on the web. You can't guess who will sell their email list or have it stolen by hackers.

VirtID Email keeps your real email address shielded. You create a unique VirtID email address for each web site you register with or purchase from. Email from them (and only them) is delivered to your regular mailbox. If that address leaks out, mail from anyone else is treated as spam.

Where Does Spam Go?

You can have the spam messages...

  • Delivered to another "spam" mailbox you set up (such as at a free email site like Google Mail or Yahoo), or
  • Ignored, or
  • Delivered to your main mailbox (but with a keyword hint in the envelope saying "ProbablySpam").

Where Do I Read My Email?

You read your email as usual, from your regular email account. "Good" email is forwarded to you there. (Spam goes wherever you tell it to.)

Other features

  • Easy to use: It takes just one click while you're on a purchase or registration page to generate a unique VirtID to use for that site. Just drag it over.

  • Easy to sign up: Enter your email address, a password, what you want done with your spam, and you're on your way.

  • Choose your own address: If you want a specific address to use for a certain site you can request it just by typing in what you want. (E.g. "PatSmithEbay@virtid.com".) If it's available, it's yours.

  • Anti-Spam Keyword: You can have real mail delivered with a special anti-spam keyword of your choice to ensure delivery even if your spam filter is aggressive.

  • Filter incoming mail by the first sender only: If you only expect one email from a site you can have further emails considered spam. (Default is to allow mail from any address at the first site that sends mail to your VirtID.)

  • Expiration time: You can receive all emails through each VirtID until a certain number of days/weeks/months/year, after which mail through them is considered spam. Default is to accept mail from allowed addresses forever. Expiration time can be set for each VirtID email address separately. (Can also be used to allow any mail from any sender but only for a fixed time, after which that address is routed to spam.)

  • Filter based on keywords other than sender address: You can choose any text and emails for that VirtID will be considered valid only if that text appears in either the sender's address or the message itself (your choice).

  • Tons of VirtIDs: You can create a thousand VirtID addresses per account. (We only set a limit on it to prevent abuse; if you need more just drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.)

  • Makes it Easy to Change your Real Address: If you change your real mailbox because you change your ISP (or whatever reason), you don't have to tell the whole world your new address. You change it one place, in your VirtID Email control panel, and all your mail keeps coming right to you.

Why Not Use a Gaggle of Free Google Mail Accounts?

You could, but then you'd have to log in to each one to check them all. With VirtID Email addresses, they all arrive in your regular mail box. You only have to read email in one place. (They also take a lot more time to create than a new VirtID.)
